Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued a secretarial order on December 23 that the BLM evaluate lands for wild lands values/characteristics as a component of the BLM's multiple use mission. It is a reversal of the policy in effect since 2003 that was created by former Secretary Gale Norton and Utah's governor at that time, Mike Leavitt. Some lands may become designated as "wild lands" through a public process. Congressional will decide whether such designated lands become wilderness areas.
As important wildlife habitat continues to shrink, CWF applauds this secretarial order that will work to restore balance in considering multiple uses of BLM lands. Wildlife related and other outdoor recreation are important contributors to the Colorado economy.
